Dreaming has become the last line of defense to hold one’s individuality; the space is a sacred land, protecting one’s origin and identity, or the lack of them. It is a dual setting built to accommodate both the material space that the body rests in and an imaginary space, which sets the mind free to dream. The play is written in three different languages (English, Italian and Greek), which interferes with the sounds of raindrops, waves and paddles stirring the sea’s water. The performance begins with a documentary sound design where immigrants narrate in their mother language their dreams. The sound environment in addition to the fact that performers speak in three different languages aims to create the feeling of uncertainty, of a fluxus situation, establishing the ‘in between”. The trigger of taste and smell also recalls memories and nostalgia.

Participants wear headphones lying on the same beds within Mekeio, where hundreds of young women where lying every night for nearly a century, finding a shelter away from their homes. Throughout the narration, the audience members in their artificial “sleeping” state will be confronted with sensory stimuli produced by the performers. Once the narration is over, a lullaby is being heard while the performers awaken the audience members and escort them to the exit.

The project is presented In collaboration with the Municipal Theater of Ioannina and its artistic director Eleni Dimopoulou, and in communication with Lotus Eaters Product Director Katerina Liatsou.

The “Lotus Eaters” group was created within the Theater Department of the School of Fine Arts of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, from where most of its members have graduated. The performance “Resetting Homeland” is the first work of the group with the existing composition which includes: Marilou Bombolou, Katerina Sissini, Penny Eleftheriadou (performers), Anastasia Tzellou (text), Kostas Vomvolos (music), Manolis Stamatiadis (sound technician) and Katerina Liatsou (production).

Dates: Saturday- Sunday, October 13-14, 9 performances each day for 6 participants each.

Και μπορεί να επιλέξει ποτέ κάποιος πραγματικά, ολοκληρωτικά ή πρόκειται για έναν εαυτό
παγιδευμένο πάντα σε αυτό το ενδιάμεσο διάστημα;
Και τι γίνεται με το παρελθόν;
Και με τα όνειρα; Όταν είσαι κάπου αλλού σε τι γλώσσα ονειρεύεσαι;

Ο χώρος είναι ο μη τόπος ενός κοινού υπνωτηρίου. Άνθρωποι που κοιμούνται μαζί, αλλά ονειρεύεται ο καθένας μόνος. Άλλωστε ο ύπνος, το όνειρο είναι το τελευταίο οχυρό που προστατεύει την ιδιωτικότητα -ένας χώρος που περικλείει την ιδιαίτερη ταυτότητα/πατρίδα του καθενός ή την έλλειψή της.

Οι θεατές ξαπλώνουν φορώντας ακουστικά πάνω στα κρεβάτια, όπου για σχεδόν έναν αιώνα κοιμούνταν και ονειρεύονταν εκατοντάδες κοπέλες κάθε νύχτα που βρίσκονταν μακριά από τα σπίτια τους. Όλοι βρίσκονται σε κοινό τόπο και κοινή συνθήκη, όμως ο καθένας ακούει την αφήγηση να ψιθυρίζει στο δικό του αυτί. Πρόκειται για έναν χώρο διττό, για τον πραγματικό τόπο όπου το σώμα κοιμάται και το φαντασιακό τοπίο όπου το μυαλό ονειρεύεται.

Η performance “Resetting homeland” έχει παρουσιαστεί στο πλαίσιο της Mediterranea 18-Young Artists Biennale (Τίρανα, 2017), στο 7ο Φεστιβάλ Νέων Καλλιτεχνών “Τα 12 Κουπέ” στο Τρένο στο Ρουφ (Αθήνα, 2017), στο Little Big House (Θεσσαλονίκη, 2017) καθώς και στο Κέντρο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης του Κρατικού Μουσείου Σύγχρονης Τέχνης (Θεσσαλονίκη, 2018).
Η παράσταση αποτελεί πρόταση του ΔΗΠΕΘΕ Ιωαννίνων προς την Μπιενάλε Δυτικών Βαλκανίων.

* Η performance διαρκεί 20’ και απευθύνεται κάθε φορά σε 6 θεατές, ενώ μπορεί να πραγματοποιηθεί είτε στα ελληνικά είτε στην τρίγλωσση εκδοχή της (αγγλικά, ιταλικά, ελληνικά).
* Η performance απευθύνεται και σε άτομα με μερική ή ολική απώλεια όρασης.
